The English club and the Irish player decided to end the bond mutually so that the transfer was facilitated.
Doherty arrived at Tottenham in 2020 to reinforce the team’s defense after excelling at Wolverhampton. The 31-year-old made 71 appearances, but did not impress with his performances and ended up being a substitute for Brazilian Emerson Royal – also much criticized – under Antonio Conte.
In the current season, the winger made just seven appearances for the London club, which has already signed the Portuguese Pedro Porro to take his place, for 45 million euros (R$ 249 million). Doherty was even criticized by Conte, who said he didn’t see him “in the right way” to start a game playing.
The athlete arrives at Atlético de Madrid with the club having an irregular season and which may be Simeone’s last in charge of the team. The Colchoneros are currently in fourth place in La Liga, with 34 points.
