Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin negatively assessed Ukraine’s threats to boycott the 2024 Olympics
Russian Sports Minister Oleg Matytsin reacted to the threats of the President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine Vadym Gutsait to boycott the 2024 Games in Paris. It is reported by TASS.
“My opinion on such statements is definitely negative. They are destructive, they harm international sport in general,” Matytsin said. According to the functionary, the consequences of any boycott have a long-term negative effect.
On January 28, the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, said that the boycott by Ukraine does not correspond to the mission of the Olympic Charter. “Individual athletes should not be discriminated against by exclusion, even if countries are in a state of conflict,” Bach explained.
On January 26, Gutzeit said that the Ukrainian team could miss the 2024 Olympics if the teams of Russia and Belarus participate in it. Before that, the IOC noted that they were considering the possibility of individual admission to competitions of Russian and Belarusian athletes.
