The head of the ROC Pozdnyakov urged the NOC of Ukraine to abandon the idea of a boycott of the 2024 Olympic Games
President of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov called on the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Ukraine to abandon the idea of a boycott of the 2024 Olympic Games. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
“I would like to point out that the ROC is strictly in line with the Olympic Charter. We are doing everything necessary for the mission of the Olympic Movement to operate on the territory of Russia,” he said. The head of the ROC added that history shows that any attempt at a boycott has never succeeded in the country that called for it.
Earlier, the head of the NOC of Ukraine, Vadim Gutzeit, said that the national team could boycott the 2024 Games if teams from Russia and Belarus participate in them. In response, the head of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Thomas Bach, said that such a decision was not in line with the Olympic Charter.
On January 25, the IOC said that they were considering the possibility of individual admission to competitions for Russian and Belarusian athletes. It was reported that only athletes who did not support the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine and did not violate anti-doping rules will be able to get permission to compete in international tournaments.
