Polish tennis players took over the Australian Open. Only one country is better

Magda Linette (45th WTA) writes the most beautiful card in the history of her career during the Australian Open. The 30-year-old advanced to the semi-finals of the Melbourne tournament on Wednesday, beating 6-3, 7-5 Czech Karolina Pliskova (31st WTA). The success of the Polish woman is not only the best result for her, but also a great achievement for Polish tennis.

Polish women delight in Australia, three semi-finals in the last 7 years

Linette, advancing to the semi-finals in Australia, became the third Polish tennis player to do so. Earlier, Agnieszka Radwańska (2014, 2016) was in the best “four” in Melbourne twice, and last season Iga Świątek (1st WTA) also advanced to the semi-finals. Linette is thus the third Polish woman in the decisive phase of the first Grand Slam of the season since 2016.

Better statistics can only boast of Americans, who have been in the top four eight times over the last seven years. By far the best in their performance was 2017, when Coco Vandeweghe (139th WTA), Venus Williams and Serena Williams advanced to the semi-finals. The famous sisters faced each other in the final, where Serena turned out to be better. The second triumph in recent years was recorded by Sofia Kenin (203rd WTA), who won in Melbourne 2020.

American women in the Australian Open semifinals in the last seven years:

  • 2016 – Serena Williams
  • 2017 – Serena Williams (win), Venus Williams, Coco Vandeweghe
  • 2019 – Danielle Collins
  • 2020 – Sofia Kenin (win)
  • 2021 – Serena Williams, Jennifer Brady
  • 2022 – Danielle Collins, Madison Keys

In this year’s edition, none of the Americans reached this stage of the competition. The closest was Jessica Pegula (3rd WTA), who lost in the quarterfinals 4:6, 1:6 to Victoria Azarenka (24th WTA). Thus, thanks to Linette’s life success, Polish women turned out to be better this season. Now the 30-year-old will face the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka (5th WTA), who is in great shape. This match will take place on Thursday, January 26, and the ladies should appear on the court around 11:00.
