Oscars 2023. “No change in the West” is a dangerous competitor to “IO”. Where can you watch Oscar-winning movies?

“No Change in the West” is an adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque’s world-famous novel of the same title. Its action takes place in the trenches on the front of World War I and describes the dramatic events from the perspective of Paul – a soldier fighting on the side that caused the whole conflict. Remarque created the book on the basis of his own experiences, because he himself belonged to the so-called “lost generation” of 18- and 19-year-olds who went straight from school to the army, and then into the middle of the turmoil of war. The novel was groundbreaking, if only because of the perspective chosen.

Oscars 2023. “Same in the West” will compete with “IO” for the statuette for the best international film

The first German edition of “In the West without Change” was published in January 1929. In Germany alone, a million copies of the books were sold in a year, and readers bought the same number abroad. Because the book has a distinctly anti-war message, in 1933, on the orders of Joseph Goebbels, then Minister of Propaganda, the Nazis banned the publication of Remarque’s works and publicly burned his books. They also lied that the writer did not actually serve on the front lines of World War I, and in addition he was supposed to be a descendant of French Jews.

The first film adaptation of the book was made a year after the publication of the novel, and in 1979 a TV movie based on it was made. This time, Swiss director Edward Berger, Ian Stokell and Lesley Paterson took on the adaptation of Remarque’s work. They decided to omit some threads and change some of the plot elements. “Paul and his companions experience firsthand how the initial euphoria of war turns to desperation and fear as they fight for their lives in the trenches,” the production enigmatically announces

The cast includes: Felix Kammerer, Albrecht Schuch, Moritz Klaus, Aaron Hilmer, Edin Hasanovic, Daniel Brühl, Adrian Grünewald and David Striesow. The film has been available on the platform since October 28, 2022 (from October 14, it was also available in selected cinemas, including in Poland). Almost immediately, it hit the platform’s global Top 10 list – it has been at the top for nine weeks. It also has a record-breaking opening among non-English Netflix films – in the first 28 days of its premiere, viewers watched it for 101,360,000 hours.

No Change in the West, directed by Edward Berger, has already won two European Film Academy awards (for make-up and special effects), and the National Board of Review appreciated the adapted screenplay. In addition, the production available on Netflix had one nomination for the Golden Globes and was nominated in as many as 10 categories for the BAFTA award.
