Russian figure skaters Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin are thinking about moving to the Israeli national team
Russian figure skaters Diana Davis and Gleb Smolkin, performing in ice dancing, are thinking about moving to the Israeli national team. The possible change of sports citizenship by athletes became known to RIA Novosti from a source familiar with the situation.
According to the source, no specific agreements have been reached and the final decision will be made based on the political situation in the world. It is noted that the couple may abandon plans to move to another team if the Russians are returned to international tournaments in the near future.
In the 2022/2023 season, Davis, the daughter of Russian coach Eteri Tutberidze, and Smolkin refused to play in Russian tournaments. Athletes living in the US explained this decision by problems with documents for leaving the partner’s country.
On September 19, it became known that Davis and Smolkin became members of the US Figure Skating Federation. It was noted that the athletes intend to qualify for the US team.
Davis and Smolkin made their senior Russian debut last season. They became eighth at the European Championships and took 14th place at the Beijing Olympics. Also on account of the couple is the silver of the Russian championship and the bronze of the national championship among juniors.
