Former world number one Martina Navratilova has been diagnosed with cancer. This was reported on the website of the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA).
The legend of world tennis was diagnosed with stage 1 throat cancer, as well as a recurrence of breast cancer. “This is a double blow, the situation is serious, but still fixable. I hope for a favorable outcome. I will fight with all my might,” said the 66-year-old athlete.
Navratilova was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. Six months later, the doctors stated that she was in remission.
Navratilova was born in Czechoslovakia, but in 1981 she became an American citizen. During her career, she won 167 tournaments in singles and 177 in doubles. Both of these results are the absolute record of all time for men and women. The athlete 18 times became the winner of the Grand Slam tournaments.
