The new (and little-known) building of the Alhambra: this is Maristán, a Nasrid hospital from the 14th century

The Alhambra has a new ‘signing’ for this 2023. It is a building that not many know about and that, until recently, was nothing more than rubble. his name is the maristanbuilt in the 14th century as the first Nasrid hospital in Europe.

It has just finished its first phase of restoration, being open to the public since Christmas. Visitors to the Dobla de oro route will be able to see the Maristán de Granada, located in the Bajo Albayzíngoing unnoticed due to its deterioration until recently.

Its restoration allows us to appreciate how it complies with Arab architectural canons: rectangular floor plan, two heights and a central patio. It is also documented that it functioned as a wine warehouse in the 18th century or as a tenement house.

A building full of stories that increases the tourist attraction of the Alhambra, a monumental complex that continues to hide surprises. Its restoration has entailed an investment of €1.3 million throughout four decades of restoration.
