At dawn on Saturday, FC Barcelona made official the hiring of Xavi Hernández as the new coach, a legend of the Catalan club called to rebuild a team in free fall.

“It is time to go home. Welcome, Xavi ”, said Barcelona on Twitter, hours after the Qatari club Al-Sadd announced that it was releasing its hitherto coach after paying a millionaire termination clause.

In a subsequent statement, the Barça entity indicated that “it has reached an agreement with Xavi Hernández to become the coach of the first team for the remainder of this season and two more.”

“Xavi Hernández is scheduled to arrive in Barcelona this weekend and that on Monday, November 8 at noon, his presentation as a new coach of the FC Barcelona first team will be held in an event open to the public at the Camp Nou”, adds the text .

The 41-year-old former Barça midfielder, an emblem of the game of touch that led the club to the top of the world, was the favorite candidate for the board and the fans since the dismissal of the Dutch Ronald Koeman the previous week.

However, negotiations with Al-Sadd, the club where he retired as a player and started as a coach in 2019, delayed his hiring by FC Barcelona, now led on an interim basis by Sergi Barjuan, the subsidiary’s coach. (D)
