Former director of the Football Federation of Australia Merciades spoke out against the transfer of the RFU to Asia
Former Executive Director of the Football Federation of Australia Bonita Merciades spoke out against the transition of the Russian Football Union (RFU) to the Asian Confederation. Her words are quoted by The Guardian.
Merciades said Russian teams should be banned from international tournaments despite a possible move to Asia. In her opinion, Russia has deprived itself of the right to be part of the world community. The Australian also felt that it was time for the International Football Federation (FIFA) to deprive the RFU of membership in the organization.
Earlier, the RFU executive committee created a working group that will study the issue of transition from the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) to the Asian Confederation. The discussion needs to be completed by March 2023.
Before that, it became known that UEFA opposed the desire of the RFU to leave the organization. At the same time, FIFA will not prevent the Russian team from participating in the selection for the 2026 World Cup if the country moves to Asia.
On February 28, FIFA and UEFA excluded Russian teams and clubs from international tournaments. The teams do not play in European competitions, and the Russian team has lost the opportunity to compete for reaching the finals of the 2022 World Cup.
