The dismissal of coach Thomas Tuchel from Chelsea after the defeat to Dinamo Zagreb a week ago was “a surprise for everyone”, admitted this Tuesday, midfielder Jorginho, in a press conference prior to the clash with RB Salzburg in the Champions League.
“A lot of things happened (in a week), as you all know. We are trying to adapt to the new coach and we are really looking forward to working with him”, explained the player, when asked about his last days at the club.
After just over a year and a half in office, Tuchel was sacked the day after the ‘Blues’ lost in their Champions League debut and after a lackluster start to the season.
Two days later, Chelsea announced Graham Potter, who until then had been at Brighton, as the team’s new manager. “It was a surprise for everyone, obviously,” said Jorginho, not to mention the cast’s reaction to the change.
“We talked about it, but what was said between the players will stay between us, sorry,” he explained smiling. “We had a great time with Thomas. We are grateful for everything he has done for us, for the club, for the fans, but now there is a new challenge and we are very excited.”
While the match against RB Salzburg will be crucial for Chelsea to maintain good chances of qualifying for the round of 16 of the Champions League, Jorginho assured that the team has already turned the page after the defeat in the debut.
“Now we have more games ahead. Life goes by so fast and we don’t have time to think about it. We have to focus on what we have to do.”
According to him, the first contact with Potter was positive. “He came with an idea, we just have to try to know what he expects of us and do our best. We, the whole team, are responsible for what will happen”, said Jorginho.
“He is very humble, but with a very good way of working. He is facing this challenge and I think he will do a good job. He has good ideas and a group of players ready to do anything and listen to what he wants. It’s a good combination to get good results,” he concluded.
