Russian specialists have developed a net to protect motorways and transport infrastructure from drone attacks, manufacturer Systems of Mechanical Protection reported to news agency TASS.

The company, also known as SMZ, said the solution was developed following an initiative by the Russian Ministry of Transport to permit road funds to finance the installation and restoration of protective structures on roads.

Net specifications and features

The new product is a modification of the Darwin protective catching net, designated as Darwin-D. It is designed to protect roads with a width of 12 meters or more from strikes by FPV copters and aircraft-type drones.

SMZ noted that the polyamide net stretches upon collision with a drone, reducing the probability that the device's warhead will detonate. The netting sheet has a width of 38 meters, and one transport kit contains 6,000 square meters of material weighing 83 grams per square meter.

In May, SMZ reported that Russia would also begin using the original Darwin net to counter Ukrainian uncrewed boats.
