The Municipality of Sfakia has received a €510,000 funding proposal from the Region of Crete, to be submitted under the Regional Development Programme for Crete 2026-2030, specifically under priority axis 6.7, known as “Green Cities,” which covers urban regeneration, buildings, and related infrastructure.
The sum forms part of a total €2 million allocated to Sfakia under the programme. The mayor said the proposal allows more than one project to be submitted, provided combined costs do not exceed the municipality’s ceiling.
Three projects are planned: a €250,000 regeneration scheme in the settlement of Vouvas; €160,000 for repairs and maintenance of municipal buildings; and €100,000 for modernising municipal sanitary facilities and improving access for people with disabilities.
Buildings earmarked for work include the Town Hall, the Cultural Centre, and the Bikouvaris building, which houses the Folklore Museum, the Historical Museum, and the Sfakia Community Centre.
Mayor Zervos described the funding as another result of the authority’s lobbying efforts and thanked Regional Governor Stavros Arnaoutakis and regional services for their support. He said the municipality would continue to use every available funding tool to upgrade infrastructure and advance sustainable development in the mountainous and remote area.
