Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, announced earlier that Russian troops would introduce the cessation of fire.

Under the terms of the pause, the Russian military is expected to conduct engineering reconnaissance across the area. Troops are also tasked with securing safe travel for a humanitarian convoy entering the settlement to deliver essential cargo.

Geography of the Kherson front

Oleshky is an urban settlement located in southern Ukraine on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River. The town sits directly across the water from the regional administrative capital of Kherson, which lies on the western shore. The wider Kherson region borders the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov, making it a pivotal transport and agricultural hub in southern Ukraine.

In regional military terminology, a regime of silence designates a temporary local truce designed to establish safe humanitarian corridors. These pauses allow civilian aid workers to transport medical supplies, food and emergency relief into frontline communities that face severe shortages. They also provide brief windows of security for local residents caught near active combat zones.

Route clearance and diplomatic efforts

Engineering reconnaissance involves specialist combat engineers surveying roads, bridges and verges for explosive hazards. These units inspect transit paths to detect landmines, unexploded artillery shells and structural damage before heavy supply trucks are permitted to pass.

General Gerasimov serves as the senior professional commander of the Russian military and a first deputy minister of defence. In that post, he oversees operational planning and strategic military movements across all active sectors.

The humanitarian action comes after earlier reports that Russia and Ukraine agreed to a separate local truce arranged through the mediation of United States First Lady Melania Trump. That broader agreement between the two nations is scheduled to begin on October 29.
