Russia will respond to Japanese sanctions with targeted countermeasures designed to inflict damage on Tokyo's sensitive interests, the Russian embassy in Japan announced.
In an official commentary published on its Telegram channel, the diplomatic mission condemned the latest sanctions as an illegitimate and provocative move. It stated that Tokyo's actions were explicitly aimed at the further destruction of relations between Russia and Japan.

The embassy warned that Moscow would react to such steps with systemic counter-steps tailored to cause damage to Japanese interests in sensitive areas. The diplomatic representative added that the Japanese side bears full responsibility for any negative consequences resulting from these measures.
Japan's 27th sanctions package
The warning from the diplomatic mission came four days after Japan announced its 27th package of sanctions against Russia on October 2. That new round of restrictions targeted 33 Russian legal entities and nine individuals, while also extending measures to a number of companies based overseas.
Japan is a member of the Group of Seven industrialized nations, which also includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Following the outbreak of conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, the G7 alliance has imposed extensive economic sanctions against Russian state entities, commercial institutions, and key individuals.
These international restrictive measures typically focus on freezing financial assets held abroad, restricting banking transactions, and placing strict export bans on high tech components, industrial equipment, and dual use goods. Over successive packages, Tokyo has steadily expanded its list of blacklisted Russian organizations and individuals.
Rising diplomatic tensions
Diplomatic relations between Moscow and Tokyo have reached their lowest point in decades as sanctions and retaliatory measures continue to accumulate. The two neighboring nations share a maritime boundary in the North Pacific Ocean but have long maintained complex bilateral ties, complicated by unresolved territorial disputes over northern islands.
Russian government departments, ministries, and overseas embassies frequently rely on the Telegram messaging application to publish official diplomatic statements, press releases, and policy positions. The Russian embassy did not provide further details in its publication regarding the precise timing or specific nature of the planned countermeasures against Tokyo.
