Russia has accused Ukraine of planning a false-flag attack against the British ambassador in Moscow to frame Russian security forces.
The Federal Security Service of Russia, known as the FSB, arrested an unidentified Russian citizen who previously worked as a security guard at the embassy. Russian authorities charged the suspect with high treason, alleging he transmitted intelligence to Ukrainian agencies to assist in targeting British diplomats, according to a report by The New York Times.
Russian investigators claimed the suspect gathered intelligence on the British ambassador, key diplomatic staff, the embassy building, and the ambassador's official residence in Moscow. The FSB stated that the collected data was sent to Ukrainian journalist and blogger Dmytro Karpenko to enable Ukrainian government forces to execute sabotage operations.
Video footage released by Russian media on September 10 showed plainclothes officers detaining the former guard. The man later appeared on camera with his face blurred to deliver a forced confession, using language that appeared scripted and rehearsed.
Diplomatic reactions and disinformation allegations
The British government declined to comment on the specific charges. British officials stated only that Russia regularly attempts to spread disinformation in an effort to sow division between Ukraine and its international allies.
Ukraine's Centre for Countering Disinformation, a state body operating under the National Security and Defense Council, dismissed the Kremlin's claims in a statement published on Telegram. The centre described the announcement as an information maneuver designed to establish an alibi in advance of potential Russian provocations.
The FSB serves as the principal domestic security and counterintelligence agency in the Russian Federation, succeeding Soviet KGB structures. Under Russian criminal law, high treason charges can result in severe penalties, including sentences of up to 20 years in prison. Diplomatic relations between London and Moscow have faced extreme strain since Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Escalating Kremlin threats against Great Britain
The FSB claimed that Ukraine aimed to place responsibility for the alleged plot on Moscow in order to draw Great Britain into a direct armed conflict with Russia. The claims come amid a broader push by the Kremlin to threaten London and undermine British assistance to Ukraine.
Analysis published by The i Paper noted that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin risks cornering himself with mounting threats against Western nations. Analysts cautioned that such escalation could trigger a dangerous confrontation with additional countries.
Kremlin rhetoric intensified after British Prime Minister Andy Burnham pledged to expand military support for Kyiv. Burnham promised to supply Ukraine with technical blueprints for British Storm Shadow and SCALP long-range cruise missiles, which can be deployed to strike targets deep inside Russian territory.
