A 32-year-old man from Romania has been remanded in custody following a violent knife attack on his former partner and her male friend inside their home in Lavrio, Greece.
An investigating magistrate and prosecutor ordered the suspect held in pre-trial detention after he surrendered to police. He faces felony charges of attempted murder against a spouse and non-spouse, alongside four misdemeanor counts.
Lavrio, also known as Lavrion, is a coastal port town situated in the southeastern part of the Attica region of Greece. Under Greek legal procedure, serious felony charges carry mandatory court hearings where an investigating magistrate and prosecutor determine whether a suspect must be detained before trial.
Late-night break-in
Investigators said the suspect forced his way into the residence shortly after midnight on Thursday by breaking down the door. His former partner, a 32-year-old woman, and her male friend were inside the home at the time, together with the former couple's two young children.
Following the knife attack, the suspect left the house and went directly to the local Lavreotiki Police Department, where he voluntarily surrendered to officers.
Court testimony
During his plea before the magistrate, the accused reportedly claimed that he was unable to recall the exact events of the evening. He stated that he suffers from depression and had combined alcohol with pills on the night of the incident.
The man told the magistrate that he felt betrayed after being driven out roughly a year ago from the house he built with his own funds. He claimed he had spent months watching another man stay in his home, sleep in his bed, and live with his children.
He argued that he did not enter the house with the intention of attacking anyone. However, magistrates found his assertions unconvincing and ordered him transferred to prison to await trial.
