Russian satellite manufacturer Reshetnev has started dynamic testing of the Yamal-501 communications spacecraft, state space corporation Roscosmos announced in a Telegram statement on September 10, 2026.

The testing program evaluates whether the structural design of the spacecraft meets all specified engineering requirements. Roscosmos stated that specialists are testing an engineering qualification model, a physical copy of the satellite, against transportation, acoustic, and vibration loads. In aerospace manufacturing, a qualification model is constructed to validate mechanical integrity without risking actual flight hardware.

Engineers have successfully completed the transportation phase of the testing, confirming that the structural frame retains its strength during transit across different modes of transport. On the next phase, Yamal-501 will undergo acoustic and vibration tests designed to simulate the physical conditions of a launch into orbit. These upcoming environmental trials will subject the satellite copy to extreme noise and mechanical shaking.

Telecommunications platform and frequency band

The Yamal-501 spacecraft is intended to provide a range of telecommunication services, supplying communication and broadcasting coverage in the Ku frequency band. The satellite is built around the universal qualified Express-1000 satellite platform.

Reshetnev, officially known as Information Satellite Systems Reshetnev and based in Zheleznogorsk, is Russia's primary builder of telecommunication and navigation satellites. State corporation Roscosmos acts as the governing agency for national space operations, overseeing civilian satellite missions and spaceflight infrastructure.

The Express-1000 platform is a standardized satellite bus developed by Reshetnev to support telecommunications payloads in geostationary orbit. The Ku frequency band operates within microwave frequencies between 12 and 18 gigahertz, providing channels for satellite television broadcasting, voice transmission, and broadband data networks.

The Yamal satellite constellation forms a key component of Russia's space telecommunications infrastructure. Operated by Gazprom Space Systems, the network provides broadcast distribution and satellite connectivity across Russia and surrounding regions.

Antenna design developments

The start of dynamic testing follows antenna developments disclosed in July, when Reshetnev proposed a new design for satellite antennas featuring a folding umbrella-type reflector with a diameter of 12 metres.

Deployable umbrella-type reflectors use flexible mesh structures that fold tightly inside rocket payload fairings before deploying in space. Acoustic and vibration testing verifies that such complex mechanical assemblies survive the severe sound pressure and shaking produced by rocket engines during liftoff.
