Reddit user needs blood transfusion after colonoscopy error

A Reddit user needed an emergency blood transfusion after she forgot to stop taking blood thinners before undergoing a colonoscopy procedure.

Reddit user needs blood transfusion after colonoscopy error

A Reddit user known as MarelyFunctional required an emergency blood transfusion after undergoing a routine colonoscopy procedure while accidentally continuing to take prescribed anticoagulant medication.

The patient explained that although the medical examination appeared successful, doctors removed several polyps and performed 24 separate tissue biopsies during the internal scan. The combination of multiple tissue removals and active blood-thinning medication triggered severe post-procedure bleeding.

A colonoscopy is an endoscopic procedure in which medical specialists use a thin, flexible camera tube to evaluate the lining of the colon and rectum. During the procedure, doctors frequently collect small tissue samples known as biopsies or perform polyp removals to test for abnormalities or prevent intestinal cancer. Because tissue removal leaves raw internal surfaces, the procedure requires normal blood clotting to prevent complications.

Anticoagulants, commonly known as blood thinners, are prescription drugs designed to prevent blood clots in individuals facing cardiovascular risks or circulatory conditions. Clinical guidelines mandate that patients temporarily discontinue blood thinners prior to invasive surgical or endoscopic procedures. Continuing the medication during polyp removal or tissue sampling dramatically increases the risk of uncontained internal haemorrhage.

Medical Complications in a Public Toilet

Upon standing up after her examination, the woman discovered that the protective sheet beneath her was soaked in blood. However, because her cognitive awareness was heavily impaired by general anaesthesia, she dismissed the bleeding and focused entirely on obtaining food.

General anaesthesia and heavy sedative agents temporarily depress central nervous system function to ensure patient comfort during medical testing. As the medication wears off, patients often experience temporary confusion, impaired judgment, delayed physical reactions, and altered decision-making capabilities.

Before ordering a meal, the woman entered a nearby shop restroom believing she needed to use the toilet. She quickly realized that the sensation was caused by blood pooling in her rectum. Still suffering from sedation, she attempted to stop the flow by packing the area with toilet paper, comparing her efforts to treating a gunshot wound during the American Civil War.

The paper attempt proved ineffective and left her hand covered in blood. Deciding to return to the medical clinic, she stumbled toward the sink to clean her hands, noting that her bloody appearance resembled Lady Macbeth. Before she could turn on the tap, a stranger burst into the restroom and stopped abruptly upon seeing her.

Hospital Readmission and Emergency Care

Startled by the unexpected entry, the patient used her bloody hand to push the stranger away. Struggling to explain why she was covered in blood inside a public restroom, her sedated mind led her to apologize and claim that she was experiencing her menstrual period. She then exited the shop, located her husband, and returned to the hospital for treatment.

At the hospital, doctors determined that her blood loss was severe enough to require an emergency blood transfusion. A blood transfusion involves delivering donor red blood cells intravenously to quickly restore lost blood volume and maintain vital organ oxygenation following acute haemorrhage.

Her online post follows another recent Reddit account in which a male user described an embarrassing public restroom mistake. In that instance, the user realized after relieving himself that he had accidentally walked into a women's toilet facility.
