Actress Rebecca Gayheart has spoken publicly about how her family is managing six months after the death of her ex-husband, actor Eric Dane, following his battle with ALS.
The 55-year-old actress and her two daughters, 16-year-old Billie and 14-year-old Georgia, are working to navigate their loss and move forward six months after the Grey's Anatomy star passed away.
Speaking to entertainment outlet E! News, Gayheart explained that her family is currently experiencing a period of personal growth during a difficult time. She said life remains challenging for them right now, but they are coping and continuing to move ahead day by day.
Gayheart emphasized that despite their ongoing grief, the family is maintaining their daily routine. She said she continues to go to work while her daughters attend school, carrying out all their necessary responsibilities.
Dane had publicly disclosed his diagnosis of ALS, a progressive neurodegenerative condition also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, in April 2025 before passing away the following year.
Return to acting career
Gayheart is currently preparing for a new professional venture by working on a musical adaptation of Jawbreaker, the 1999 dark comedy film in which she originally starred.
The actress explained that she had previously taken an extended hiatus from acting in order to focus on being a full-time mother to her daughters.
She noted that participating in the musical project is particularly meaningful because it allows her to set an example for her children. She said it is important to show her daughters that women can return to work, accept intimidating opportunities, and persevere even when facing life's hardships.
Parenting and lessons for the future
Reflecting on her daughters' future, Gayheart shared that she and Dane had worked together prior to his death to prepare their children for adulthood.
She explained that both parents focused on instilling strong character in Billie and Georgia, encouraging them to make sound decisions, protect themselves, and establish healthy personal boundaries.
Gayheart added that they had taught their daughters from an early age how to distinguish between safe and dangerous situations, giving them the confidence and understanding needed to navigate life independently.
