Zak Penn, the screenwriter behind Ready Player One, has announced that he is working on a script for a sequel, Ready Player Two, according to a report this week.
Ready Player One was released in 2018 and was generally well received by audiences. With no concrete progress toward a sequel in the eight years since, it had been widely assumed the film would remain a standalone adaptation.
The sequel novel, Ready Player Two, was published in 2020 and briefly generated talk of a film adaptation at the time, but the project never moved forward. It now appears to be advancing, though later than expected. It is not yet known whether Steven Spielberg, who directed the first film, will be involved in the sequel.
What Ready Player One Is About
Ready Player One is based on Ernest Cline's science fiction novel of the same name and follows an ordinary young man drawn into a dangerous adventure inside a virtual world called the OASIS. The film features technology such as advanced VR headsets and full-body haptic suits. Spielberg's film also depicts how advertisers and profit-seeking companies would shape that virtual universe.
In Ready Player Two, young people who gain control of the OASIS discover a revolutionary brain-computer interface invented by James Halliday and set off on a new adventure built around that technology.
