Former regional councillor Rafael Mayer Haro, 50, died on August 5 when his vehicle veered off the road and fell into a 200-meter abyss in the La Libertad region of Peru. His 18-year-old son, who was traveling as the co-pilot, was injured in the accident.
The Regional Emergency Operations Center (COER) of La Libertad reported that the crash occurred after 7:00 a.m. in the Diablo sector of Huamachuco district, located in Sánchez Carrión province.
Local serenos and officers from the National Police of Peru (PNP) arrived at the scene to retrieve the body and transport the injured teenager to Leoncio Prado Hospital.
Crash Investigation and Background
A local sereno told local press that excessive speed likely caused the accident, adding that the driver apparently fell asleep at the wheel. Official investigations will determine the causes of the crash, which has shocked the local community.
Mayer Haro served as an elected regional councillor for Otuzco province from 2011 to 2014. After completing his term, he managed private commercial businesses in the construction and textile industries.
