American aerospace company Radia is developing a giant transport aircraft called WindRunner that could carry fully assembled rocket stages, boosters, satellites and returned reusable spacecraft directly to launch sites, according to the company and Interesting Engineering.

The plan is to fly oversized space hardware whole, rather than breaking it into pieces and shipping it by sea or road over several days, Radia said.



Why size matters more than weight

Radia designed WindRunner around cargo volume rather than just cargo weight. The company argues that size, not mass, has become the bigger bottleneck for the space industry, as rockets and satellites keep growing while cargo planes, roads, ports and other transport infrastructure remain limited in what they can handle.

Because of those limits, large space systems often have to be dismantled before transport, and ground or sea shipping can take weeks, Radia said. Beyond the added cost and delay, moving expensive hardware multiple times raises the risk of damage.

WindRunner is meant to carry fully assembled rocket stages and boosters, large satellites, and reusable vehicles recovered after launch. Radia said that deliveries between a factory, a test site and a launch pad could take hours instead of days or weeks once the aircraft is in service.

A nose that opens and a low cargo deck

To load oversized objects, WindRunner will have a nose section that opens, a low-set cargo deck and a dedicated system for moving freight in and out. Radia said the aircraft will still work with standard airport and cargo-handling equipment, so operators would not need to build specialized infrastructure at every destination.

The plane is also being designed to take off and land on unpaved runways as short as roughly 1,800 meters, or just under two kilometers. That could let it reach not only major airports but also remote spaceports, test ranges and temporary bases.

Retrieving landed rocket stages

Radia said WindRunner could also support reusable rockets. If a stage or other spacecraft touches down away from its home spaceport, the aircraft could pick it up and fly it back for servicing ahead of its next launch.

Radia said its cargo bay would be large enough to carry, fully assembled, satellites roughly twice the size class that current air transport can accommodate. If achieved, that could ease pressure on spacecraft designers to shrink their vehicles just to make them transportable.

The company said WindRunner is not meant to replace existing military transport aircraft or ground logistics, but to serve as specialized transport for cargo too large for current aviation. Radia said it sees both commercial and government organizations needing to move large satellites, rocket components and other space hardware as potential customers.
