Technology firm Photon Matrix has opened worldwide pre-orders for an automated anti-mosquito laser system that detects and shoots down flying insects in real time.

The device has transitioned from a crowdfunding campaign that previously appeared too ambitious for commercial release into a market-ready consumer product. Two distinct models are available for indoor and outdoor environments, with delivery schedules depending on the buyer's region.

According to technology publication New Atlas, the system tracks insect flight paths and directs a laser beam automatically without requiring manual user intervention.

Laser-based pest control systems rely on optical sensors and rapid beam steering to intercept fast-moving targets. While military and industrial defense systems have long used light detection and ranging for target tracking, applying minified sensors to domestic pest management represents a shift toward chemical-free household automation.

Detection technology and targeting range

To locate insects in flight, the Photon Matrix device combines light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensors, millimetre-wave radar, and artificial intelligence computer vision. This sensor suite allows the system to identify targets measuring as small as two millimetres at distances of up to six metres.

The targeting mechanism operates within a 90-degree field of view and can track mosquitoes moving at flight speeds of up to one metre per second. Once a target is identified, an internal mechanism automatically aligns the laser beam with the insect's position.

The outdoor model features a visible blue Class 4 laser, as indicated on the product's warning label. In addition to target destruction, the blue beam was selected partly for the visual effect it creates during operation.

Class 4 lasers are high-power optical devices capable of causing eye damage and skin burns upon direct exposure. Devices utilizing this classification typically require protective placement or safety controls to prevent unintended human or pet contact.

Indoor operations and chemical-free defense

Photon Matrix stated that its intelligent aerial defense system against mosquitoes operates using LiDAR detection and targeting technology. The company presented the combination of AI vision, real-time tracking, and laser elimination as a physical method of mosquito control that eliminates the need for conventional chemical sprays or repellents.

While a separate laser and AI system capable of targeting mosquitoes in mid-air was demonstrated several months ago, that implementation was a custom project built by an individual engineer for private home use. The Photon Matrix release marks the first commercially available device open for retail pre-orders.

For indoor spaces, Photon Matrix developed a separate version that replaces the visible blue beam with an infrared laser that remains invisible to the human eye. According to the manufacturer, the indoor unit operates at a noise level below that of a whisper, allowing it to run continuously inside a house without adding audible noise to a room.

Mobile application and smartphone integration

Users control both models through a companion mobile application that allows customization of the scanning angle and detection range. The application also includes options to schedule automatic power-on and power-off times and display activity maps.

Beyond basic control, the application incorporates statistical tracking features similar to a video game interface. It maintains a historical log of eliminated mosquitoes, displays global user leaderboards, and provides heat maps and activity analytics showing where insect concentration is highest.

Artificial intelligence in smart home ecosystems is traditionally restricted to virtual voice assistants, automated lighting schedules, and HVAC climate control. Integrating real-time computer vision into active physical interception reflects an expanding scope for domestic autonomous hardware.

Hardware specifications, pricing and availability

The outdoor model is powered by a 20,000 mAh fast-charging external battery that provides approximately four hours of continuous runtime. This battery life is paired with a 360-degree motorized rotating base, enabling full area coverage without requiring manual repositioning of the main unit.

Each outdoor package includes the main device, a carrying bag, a power adapter, a USB-C Power Delivery cable, a power extension cord, and three mounting options consisting of a fixed base, a desktop base, and the rotating base. According to company promotional material, regional power adapters are provided for China, the United States, and Europe.

Photon Matrix lists the indoor unit at a discounted price of $988, down from its original price of $1,188, while the outdoor model is priced at $1,088, reduced from $1,288. Both prices include free shipping and a 12-month warranty, with shipping destinations and estimated delivery dates available on the manufacturer's website.
