Peru health ministry warns of heart risks from exercising in heat

Peru’s Ministry of Health has warned that exercising in extreme heat raises the risk of heart attacks, arrhythmias and other cardiovascular complications, particularly for people with pre-existing conditions.

Cardiologist Alber Terrones Zamora, of the Hospital Carlos Lanfranco La Hoz, said that when a person exercises in temperatures above 30 to 35 degrees Celsius, the body activates mechanisms to regulate its temperature, placing greater strain on the cardiovascular system. He added that this overload reduces blood flow and impairs heart function, increasing the risk of a heart attack or arrhythmia.

The doctor recommended stopping exercise immediately if symptoms such as persistent dizziness, blurred vision or a pressing pain in the chest appear, as these can signal a medical emergency.

People with hypertension, diabetes or a history of heart disease face the greatest danger, the specialist said. Older adults are also among the most vulnerable.

The ministry advised avoiding physical activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., staying well hydrated before, during and after exercise, wearing loose light-coloured clothing, and rehydrating gradually rather than drinking very cold fluids immediately after activity.

The ministry also recommended preventive medical check-ups before high-intensity sport, especially for those with cardiovascular or metabolic conditions. People can call the free health line 113 for emergencies or consultations.
