Peru's Congress has set the size of its permanent committees for the 2026-2031 legislative period. Senate committees will each have 12 members, while Chamber of Deputies committees will range from 6 to 26 members.
The Senate's Board of Spokespersons, led by Miguel Torres Morales, approved the 12-member format. It applies to the Committee on Constitution, Regulations and Foreign Relations; National Defense and Internal Order; Productive Development, Energy and Mines, Infrastructure and Labor; Economy, Environment and Consumer Defense; Health, Education, Culture, Women and Social and Digital Development; State Management and the Comptroller; and Justice and Human Rights.
Senate party breakdown
In each of those committees, Fuerza Popular will hold four seats, Juntos por el Peru three, Renovacion Popular two, and the Partido del Buen Gobierno, Partido Civico OBRAS and Ahora Nacion one each.
The Senate's Ethics Committee will have six members, one from each parliamentary group. The Intelligence Committee will have five permanent members for the full term, with Fuerza Popular holding two seats and Juntos por el Peru, Renovacion Popular and the Partido del Buen Gobierno one each.
Chamber of Deputies committees
The Chamber of Deputies' Board of Spokespersons, led by Oscar Reto Otero, set the distribution of its work groups, covering 16 ordinary legislative committees for the 2026-2027 annual session period.
Committees of 26 members are Constitution, Regulations and Foreign Relations; Modernization of State Management and the Comptroller; Economy, Banking, Finance and Financial Intelligence; Education, Culture and Sport; Justice and Human Rights; Social Inclusion, Family, Women and Andean, Amazonian and Afro-Peruvian Peoples; and Infrastructure, Housing and Transport.
Committees of 20 members are National Defense and Internal Order; Agrarian Development; Consumer Defense and Regulation of Public Services; Energy and Mines; Production, Foreign Trade and Tourism; Environment and Sustainability; Health; Labor and Social Security; and Science, Technological Innovation and Digital Society.
Among non-legislative ordinary committees, the Constitutional Accusations Committee will have 26 members, while the Legislative Ordering and Monitoring Committee and the Ethics Committee will each have six.
Ethics committee members named
The Chamber's Ethics Committee will include one member from each caucus for a two-year term: Mery Infantes Castaneda of Fuerza Popular, Cesar Tito Rojas of Juntos por el Peru, Edwin Espinoza Huillca of the Partido del Buen Gobierno, Javier Cipriani Thorne of Renovacion Popular, Heber Lopez Letona of Obras, and Harvey Colchado Huamani of Ahora Nacion.
Ruth Luque seeks special committee
Senator Ruth Luque of Ahora Nacion said that if her bloc does not preside over any Senate committee, it will request to lead a special committee, such as Constitutional Accusations, Ethics or Political Control. She told reporters that her party had been informed it would not be entitled to a committee under the calculation being applied, but said that for reasons of fairness, if that decision were applied, her bloc should be entitled to a special committee.
