BATHS, TUNGURAHUA

The machinery used in different work fronts in the cantons of Baños de Agua Santa, Patate, Quero, Ambato and Pelileo was relocated to provide immediate attention to the damage caused by the strong storm.

Roberto Romero, director (e) of Roads and Construction of the Tungurahua provincial government, indicated that this measure was taken to comply with the declaration of emergency that was decided the previous week in these jurisdictions.

Rains cause problems in drinking water systems in Tungurahua; landslides and floods cause other effects in Pastaza

At the moment, with the work carried out by operators and technical personnel, the recovery of around 60% of connectivity was achieved on the main roads that suffered damage from the storm. The advance has been achieved despite the fact that rainfall is still recorded in the highlands.

Romero added that, for this reason, it is not possible to work on the banks of rivers or streams because rainfall is high and flows are still high. Even, he indicated, it is not yet possible to determine what the investment is going to be, both in machinery and in civil works in order to comprehensively rehabilitate the road network.

In the course of this week, the official explained that work will be carried out to clean slopes, rubble and blockage of sewers in rivers and streams that affected secondary roads. The works are of preventive signature since not doing them could cause a collapse in the structures that are subjected to the strong impact of rains and the dragging of stone material and of another type.

With the work carried out during this week, it is planned to enable at least one traffic lane in the secondary road to connect the sectors that are isolated due to the detachment of materials. Río Blanco – El Palacio, in Baños, for example, records the total loss of the road.

Romero explained that work is being done on around fifteen fronts with machinery from the provincial government, municipalities, parish councils and contracted excavators. The cantons of Baños, Patate and Quero are the ones that register the greatest damage. There, areas have been intervened that present plugging of streams, presence of debris, slopes or overflows.

The Tungurahua provincial government technician, with concern, learned that the forecasts of the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) determined that this and next week rainfall in the high areas of Patate and Baños would increase. For this reason, he indicated, progress is being made in the dredging works to avoid new collapses in structures and bridges.

No water in the El Triunfo parish, in Patate

The provincial government official said that a part of the population of the El Triunfo parish, in Patate, is without water service. This after, as a result of the rains, the drinking water infrastructure collapsed.

In these days, he said, steps will be taken to fix the pipes and achieve the recovery of the flows.

Romero called on citizens to take precautions not to live on the banks of rivers or streams because, according to the mitigation plans of the municipalities, there are larger flows that form in these areas after seasons of low water (YO)
