Four units of the National Police were affected by attacks on Tuesday night, June 28, in the north of Quito.

The general commander of the Police, Fausto Salinas, mentioned that at 8:30 p.m. a reopening of roads began in the San Miguel del Comun sector, where there were attacks and a proportional use of force was applied with the use of gas. tear gas.

Given the police action, there were posts on social networks that he said were false, since they referred to one or two deceased, so several people, in a planned manner, came to destroy community police units.

He reported that two units of the Community Police (UPC) of Calderón, in the north of the city, were thrown stones to later throw an incendiary charge.

No police officers were injured, three people were arrested, but they were released and the case was filed for investigation.

The agitation in social networks, he added, caused people from the Pisulí and La Colina neighborhoods to attack two other UPCs, but they were controlled.

Between June 13 and 29, with a cutoff at 12:00, there are ten UPCs destroyed by the protests and 228 police officers injured, of which 23 are hospitalized.

Salinas indicated that San Miguel del Comun has become a focus of violence, which he attributed to certain leaders of that community.

He added that violent protesters are being investigated, not only from indigenous movements but from other organizations, to identify who the leaders are, where their financing comes from, and the degree to which the community and institutions are affected.

Regarding the effects, he indicated that later they will make an assessment of the damage.

The police chief assured that they have not used metal pellets in their actions since the beginning of the mobilizations.

The Police “have managed a line of using only the force necessary to repel threats that have been two or three times more aggressive…”, he said.

Regarding the announcement of a mobilization from Cotopaxi, which would arrive in Quito this Thursday, the police commander said that he could not comment on the strategy, but that there were many teams that are displaced with logistical means.

He indicated that the law does not prevent the passage of people, but given the level of aggressiveness, violent crowds can be contained.

Meanwhile, the Prosecutor’s Office announced that for the alleged crime of terrorism it opened a preliminary investigation ex officio to investigate the facts regarding the burning of two Community Police units in Calderón, on Tuesday night, June 28.

Due to the protests, which have been going on for 17 days, there are 150 people arrested, 4,986 events of public disturbance and 133 complaints filed. (YO)
