The unique mental abilities of bees turned out to be higher than was thought until recently. Australian biologists taught these insects a task that primary school students solve – to distinguish between even and odd numbers.

This is reported by Conversation magazine.

To do this, the researchers divided the experimental bees into two groups. One trained to associate odd numbers with sweetened water and even numbers with bitter water, while the other group followed the opposite rules. The bees were shown cards with numbers from 1 to 10, and trained until they began to give the correct answer with an accuracy of 80%.

At the same time, smart insects that associated odd numbers with sweet water learned faster. In humans, the opposite is true – we remember even numbers faster.

Previously, scientists believed that the ability to distinguish even numbers from odd ones is unique to humans, as it requires a high level of abstract thinking. At the same time, biologists have already proven that bees are able to perform simple arithmetic operations and compare quantities with symbols.
