Being overweight or obese increases the risk of developing colorectal cancer in the future, and the longer a person is overweight, the higher the risk, whether or not the patient ends up losing weight. The results of the new study are published in the journal JAMA Oncology.

Scientists at the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg found that being overweight gradually increases the risk of colorectal cancer, similar to how smoking increases the risk of lung cancer. And just like with quitting smoking, the negative effects of being overweight persist even after losing weight.

More than 10,000 people took part in the study, which was conducted for 20 years, of which 5,600 were diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Dr. Michael Hoffmeister compared being overweight to smoking, which increases the risk of lung cancer, even for people who have quit the addiction.

Why this happens and what role excess weight plays in the development of colorectal cancer is not fully understood by scientists.

According to the American Cancer Society, more than 100,000 cases of this type of cancer are diagnosed in the United States every year, and each year it causes about 45,000 deaths.
