Cumandá Sánchez Benítez, 53, was cleaning the doorway of his home, located on Santa Rosa between Guabo and Klever Franco streets, in the center of Machala, when an armed individual approached and fired at least seven shots until finishing with his life.
This new case of violent death alerted the residents of the sector, because the victim was a former member of the National Electoral Council of El Oro.
According to the neighbors, a few minutes had passed after 09:00 on Tuesday, March 15, when they heard the detonations in the portal of the victim’s house. What happened was so fast, and they only managed to watch that a subject wearing a white sweatshirt ran out and got on a motorcycle that was a few meters away.
Sánchez’s body was left lying on the floor. His employee, who at that time was collaborating in the cleaning work, witnessed the murder. She was isolated due to concussion. The agents of the police units that arrived at the site carried out an operation immediately, without achieving results to find the whereabouts of the assassins.
At the crime scene, Dinased agents found at least seven ballistic signs. “There are bullet holes in the doors of the house. We also have video surveillance cameras where the alleged perpetrators of this crime can be identified,” said Colonel Christian Proaño, district chief of Police in Machala.
The victim had participated in electoral processes in the National Electoral Council of the province of El Oro in the position of main member, in the years 2014, 2019 and 2021. The last process corresponded to the election of president and assembly members.
Sánchez Benítez was the mother of the current provincial coordinator of the El Oro Civil Registry, Irina Figueroa Sánchez. With this murder, violent deaths have risen to 48 since the beginning of 2022 in this province. (I)
