Faced with wall collapse, Aguarico parish in Orellana is declared an emergency

The mayor of Aguarico, Juan Orellana, explained that the location of the wall made it possible to contain the undermining of the Napo River. However, more than a month ago the water began to eat away at the natural springs.

The official stated that the cantonal Emergency Operations Committee (COE) decided to declare an emergency for 60 days in the Nuevo Rocafuerte parish, which will allow to have sufficient financial resources urgently and as a priority in order to solve the structural damage of the wall. containment.

He assured that the collapse of the wall also destroyed the sanitary sewer and drinking water networks, which has left a part of the population without basic services.

The mayor held a conversation with the Minister of Transportation and Public Works, Marcelo Cabrera, to coordinate actions with the aim of solving the problem. Technical personnel from that State portfolio will arrive in the area to carry out a technical evaluation of the situation and have it attended to urgently.

Orellana commented that there are risks in the properties in the area where the undermining was registered, because as the water continues to advance, the rest of the structure will collapse.

“We are concerned about the lives that are there,” said the mayor of Aguarico.
