A 100-year-old tree was felled by protesters in the framework of the strike, laments the Minister of Energy, Juan Carlos Bermeo

The incident occurred at the Gacela Station of Block 7 Coca Payamino, said the official, who considers that this type of event cannot be repeated.

The Minister of Energy and Non-Renewable Natural Resources, Juan Carlos Bermeo, denounced this morning that a 100-year-old tree was felled by protesters who participated in the days of protest within the framework of the National Strike. The unfortunate event occurred in the Gacela Station, in Block 7 Coca Payamino, explained the minister, when some protesters tried to prevent the passage of Petroecuador workers and the public force and proceeded to demolish cedar more than 100 years old.

Additionally, he said that there were attempts to enter oil blocks in an unauthorized manner. The minister warned that these types of intrusions cannot occur, since they are strategic facilities that could suffer damage, just as it is risky for people who do not have the respective security to enter these sites.

In this sense, at the same time that it welcomed the fact that the strike has been lifted, made a call for this type of event not to happen again. The minister said it is illogical for people who claim to protect nature to act in this way.

The statements were made prior to a press conference in which he clarified that the executive decrees 238 and 239 that the Government has just issued on the electricity issue, do not represent the privatization of the sector. However, he explained that a figure of concession of certain projects and of private operation of certain systems already built will be handled.

“I want to reiterate, emphatically, that the Executive Decrees signed by President Guillermo Lasso, by no means do they mean privatization. The privatization supposes, by concept, the sale of the assets of the Ecuadorian State, and in no case, in the electrical projects that are promoted through the Executive Decree, will there be sale of the assets ”, highlighted the minister.

For Bermeo, a series of projects that are about to be tendered must be built to generate greater energy production, in order to cover future demand. He recalled that the delegation of assets to private investment has been contemplated for several years. And he gave an example to the Sopladora Hydroelectric Power Plant.

On your side, el Vice Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Gabriel Argüello He specified that the installed capacity of the sector in Ecuador is 7,400 megawatts.

He also indicated that, in the future, the country will enter a process of greater industrialization, where it will be necessary to have greater energy efficiency to meet national demand; above all, due to the development of the mining sector, the electrification of the shrimp sector, the nation’s own growth and the needs of the oil sector. “In the next 10 years, we must develop an additional 6,000 megawatts to supply national demand,” he said.
