Ecuador registered 3.9 million passengers who moved through air transport in 2021both on national and international flights, the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC) reported this Friday.
The volume of passengers is 62.5% above the official statistics for 2020, the year the covid-19 pandemic began, when 2.4 million passengers were mobilized in Ecuadorand -47.3% compared to 2019, when 7.4 million passengers traveled by air transport.
Through domestic air operations, 1.3 million passengers were transported in 2021 and 2.6 million travelers were mobilized internationally, while in cargo, 316,002 tons were moved by airaccording to the data provided by the Air Transport Management of the DGAC.
In the interior of the country, air transport users traveled mainly to the three main cities of the country: Quito, Guayaquil, Cuencain addition to the town of Baltra, located in the Galapagos Islands.
In the international arena the preferred destinations to and from Ecuador were Panama, Miami and Bogotá, while the cargo products most transported by aircraft were flowers, mail and others.
Regarding airborne cargo in 2020, the figure was 212,978 tonswhen the previous year its figure reached 278,088 tons.
In the Andean region, Ecuador was one of the first countries to resume its air operations in the midst of a pandemic.
Thus, on June 1, 2020, it did so with 25% of the authorized frequencies, by August 1 of that year it increased them to 50% and already by mid-September, national and international area activity recovered 100%. (I)
