The leader of the Chilean left, Gabriel Borichas been proclaimed President of the Republic today in a solemn ceremony in Congress, full of symbolism and attended by a large group of Heads of State and Government from all over the world.
“Before the people and peoples of Chile, yes, I promise”the former student leader proclaimed when he took office in an unprecedented nod to the native peoples, who represent 13% of the country’s population.
With scarcely 36 yearsBoric has become the youngest president in Chilean history and the first who is not part of the two center blocs that have governed the country since the return to democracy in 1990.

The new president of the Senate, the socialist Álvaro Elizalde, has imposed the presidential sash on a Boric without a tie, visibly excited and who has attended the investiture accompanied by his partner, Irina Karamanos, after having breakfast hours before with some social leaders.
“We are going to give the best of ourselves to be up to the challenges we face”said the president in brief statements to the media upon leaving the Senate, located in the coastal city of Valparaíso, 150 kilometers east of Santiago.
