After a robbery in a ‘minimarket’, residents of the neighborhood in Ambato burned a motorcycle and tried to lynch the alleged thief

Around 10:20 p.m. on Monday, police officers went to the Cristal neighborhood, Totoras parish, in Ambato, in order to attend to the alert about the robbery of a convenience store by four subjects, presumably foreigners.

The uniformed men contacted the owner of the premises, who said that four men intimidated her with firearms and stole cash from her that was in the box. After that —she said— they physically attacked her and hit her on the head.

During the escape, one of the alleged antisocials, Jhosnier LM, a 26-year-old Venezuelan, would have been intercepted by local residents who witnessed the event; They burned the motorcycle on which he tried to escape.

It was possible to verify in the videos that were published on social networks that several inhabitants who were in the place wanted to lynch the alleged antisocial, since it would not be the first time that robberies have been committed in the sector, which has them inflamed.

When they tried to put the man in the patrol car, the people evaded the custody of the uniformed officers to attack him with sticks and stones, before which the police officers had to intervene quickly to get him out of the place.

Segundo Caiza, president of the parish councils in Tungurahua, lamented that in many urban and rural places in the province there are criminals who use firearms to commit their misdeeds.

He stated that it is necessary to make reforms to the laws to punish criminals; but that, sometimes, because there are not enough elements against the detainees, the judges release them, which causes discomfort in the population. This causes them to sometimes want to take justice into their own hands.

However, Caiza did not justify the attempted lynching against the alleged criminals. He added that this is not like the indigenous justice that is applied in the communities based on the Constitution. (I)
