By majority, the Regional Council of Arequipa (CRA) rejected this Tuesday, March 8, the request for reconsideration to debate again the signing of the addendum 13 for the Majes Siguas II project. The request was presented by the representative of the province of Islay, Elmer Pinto.

His request was taken in one of the points of the ordinary session that takes place this Tuesday in the Regional Legislative. At the time of the vote, six directors voted against the reconsideration and four in favor.

The positions were the same as those taken in the session, in which the signing of addendum 13 ended up being approved. Elmer Pinto, Chriss Díaz, Edy Medina and Ysrael Zúñiga voted in favor, while José Luis Hancco, Harberth Zúñiga, Silvio Arias, Miguel Guzmán, Gloria Salas and Veto Bernal voted to deny the request.

Protest

A group of protesters arrived outside the CRA headquarters to reject the signing of addendum 13. Rubén Begazo Salinas, interim president of the Arequipa Anti-Corruption Front, indicated that they hoped that the president of the Council, José Luis Hancco, would reconsider his vote.

He added that they will not stop the protests against the approval of this addendum, since they consider that the project Majes Siguas II it will not benefit small farmers.

will not insist

After the end of the session, Pinto Cáceres indicated that he had exhausted all his possible efforts to stop the signing of the addendum and called on the Public Ministry to investigate counselor José Luis Hancco, for his sudden change of position on it.

“I have done my best, we have exhausted all possibilities. We make a request to the Public Ministry to intervene. Where is the comptroller for you to see these irregularities? ”, She pointed out.

The regional legislator also anticipated that this decision of the Regional Council will cause a Social conflict in the coming weeks due to the rejection it generates in some citizens.

“It is what is coming, it is a project that has no social acceptance. The farmers of the Majes irrigation are going to rise up, just like those of other communities such as Tarucamarca, Challhuanca and Pusa Pusa, they want to take land from the people to put on a plate for four transnational companies”, he added.
