Fisherman dies from heart wound caused by black catfish

A fishing task ended badly in the Puerto Baquerizo sector, in Naranjal (Guayas). A fisherman died on March 5 from an injury caused by a black catfish.

The victim was identified as Raúl Mejillones Ponce, 33 years old. The man was in the work of catching crabs and was preparing to return to his home.

Preliminary versions indicate that Mejillones and his companions found a specimen of black catfish that they intended to capture.

In the attempt to capture it, a sting from the catfish injured Mussels in the heart. The specimen was large, according to local media reports from Naranjal. The fortuitous event occurred while the boat was moved by a wave.

Mejillones was taken ashore to be taken to a hospital to receive urgent medical attention for his injury.

Prosecutor César Peña intervened in the procedure and confirmed that the man died on the way to the Naranjal hospital.

The coroner who performed the autopsy indicated that there was a perforation of the skin and the stinger reached the heart. This caused an internal thoracic water hemorrhage. (I)
