The United States has included South Korea in the list of countries exempt from export sanctions against Russia that relate to non-strategic materials, Sedaily.com reports, citing the republic’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
The agency said that South Korean Commerce Minister Yeo Han-gu, who was visiting Washington, reached an agreement with US Deputy Secretary of Commerce Don Graves to include Korea on the list of countries exempted from sanctions.
Thus, Korea will be able to supply smartphones, cars, washing machines and other household appliances intended for the mass consumer to the Russian Federation, on the condition that the exported items should not be at the disposal of the Russian Armed Forces or used by them.
The Korean authorities note that they “are actively participating in sanctions against Russia as a responsible member of the international community, while at the same time reducing uncertainty for Korean companies due to increased export control measures.”
Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
