The Turkish authorities do not plan to impose sanctions against Russia, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said in an interview with CNN Turk.

“We must act in accordance with the priorities of our country,” Kalyn stressed, noting that “there must be a party capable of negotiating with Russia.” “We do not plan to impose sanctions to open this channel,” he added.

Erdogan’s spokesman also said that the Turkish side “is in favor of a cessation of hostilities, supports Ukraine, while not wanting to spoil relations with Russia.” He recalled that “the relations between Turkey and Russia have shown that conflicts can be resolved through diplomacy.”

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”

In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
