Sanctioned Russian banks will not be able to issue new Visa and Mastercard cards. It is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the NSPK.
It is specified that the issued cards will continue to work within the country.
Earlier, Mastercard disconnected several Russian banks from its payment system “in accordance with sanctions orders.” The international payment system Visa was reported to be taking “quick action” to enforce Western sanctions against Russia over its military operation in Ukraine.
Sanctions, in particular, hit Russian banks, including Sberbank, VTB, Novikombank, FC Otkritie and Sovcombank. This happened after a special Russian military operation in Ukraine began on February 24. The head of the Russian Defense Ministry, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu, said that Russia would continue the special military operation in Ukraine until the set goals were achieved. According to Shoigu, the main task of this operation is to protect Russia from the military threat from Western countries, which “are trying to use the Ukrainian people in the fight against our country.”
