The International Volleyball Federation has announced that the 2022 Men’s World Championship will be moved from Russia to another country as part of the sanctions due to the Russian military operation in Ukraine.

The World Championship in Russia was to be held on August 26 – September 11 in 10 cities – Moscow, St. Petersburg, Kemerovo, Novosibirsk, Ufa, Yekaterinburg, Krasnoyarsk, Kaliningrad, Kazan, Yaroslavl, RIA Novosti reports.

Commenting on such restrictions, Roman Stanislavov, General Director of the Organizing Committee of the World Volleyball Championship in Russia, expressed regret that it was not possible to reach a consensus on the possibility of holding the tournament.

At the same time, the Minister of Physical Culture and Sports of the region, Sergei Myaus, told the agency that Kuzbass would spend the funds allocated for the World Volleyball Championship on the development of youth, student and mass sports, as well as on the overhaul of sports facilities.

Earlier, as part of the sanctions, the stages of the Volleyball League of Nations were transferred from Russia. Russia has lost several major competitions, including the Champions League final and the Formula 1 Grand Prix.

In addition, today the Norwegian Ski Federation banned Russian athletes from participating in competitions held in the country, Lenta.ru notes.

Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.”

In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, European Union, Great Britain, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.

In particular, Russian banks fell under the sanctions, including Sberbank, VTB, Novikombank, FC Otkritie and Sovcombank, and for a number of state-owned companies it was difficult to attract foreign capital.

Later, the EU countries and the United States agreed to disconnect Russian banks that fell under sanctions from the international system of interbank transactions and information exchange SWIFT. In addition, it was decided to freeze the assets of the Bank of Russia, which will create difficulties for its use of international reserves. EU countries also pledged to take steps to limit the sale of citizenship — the so-called “golden passports” that allow wealthy Russians connected to the Russian government to become citizens of EU states and gain access to their financial systems.
