Bodies of the deceased in the snowy Chimborazo were taken to the Riobamba cemetery

For now, three people remain missing.

Around 3:00 p.m. on Monday 25, the bodies of the three mountaineers who have been rescued lifeless when they were surprised by an avalanche as they ascended to the Chimborazo volcano were transferred to the morgue of the General Cemetery of Riobamba, last Sunday.

According to the National Service for Risk and Emergency Management (SNGRE), the three deceased rescued from the snow are Gregory Coro (15), from Quito; Kléver Gualavisi (39), from Cayambe; and Vanessa Villalba (32), from Quito. For now, three other people remain missing.

The vehicles of the rescue agencies that helped transport the corpses to the morgue arrived amid heartbreaking scenes from relatives and friends of the deceased who went to the Riobambeño cemetery. After the legal autopsy, the bodies were taken to their places of origin for their final farewell.

Captain Álex Andino, a member of the Special Operations Group (GOE) of the National Police, told local media that from this Sunday 24 the technical work table was installed to coordinate the ascent to Chimborazo from the early hours of this Monday 25, with in order to continue with the rescue tasks of those affected by the avalanche.

They reached the three fatalities, at an altitude of 5,640 meters, and with the support of members of the Cayambe and Quito Firefighters, as well as the GOE of Pichincha, Chimborazo and Tungurahua, as well as certified mountain guides, it was possible to rescue the bodies that had already been visualized the day before.

He assured that the tasks for the extraction of the corpses lasted around ten hours, since due to the climatic conditions of the area, the technical table decided to suspend the search work due to the risk that it represents for the rescuers.

According to the Risk Service, the mountaineers who are still missing are Jaime Jácome (46) and Bryan Tafur (25), from Cayambe, and José Parra (36), from Quito. The rest of seven affected were rescued last Sunday.

Closed entry to El Altar

On the other hand, the Ministry of the Environment, Water and Ecological Transition reported that the entrance to the El Altar-guardianía La Candelaria volcano, Laguna Amarilla sector of the Sangay National Park will be closed to the public from October 25 to 29.

The decision was made due to the extreme climatic conditions of the sector that have significantly affected the trails of the place.

Last Sunday, a group of twenty hikers who got lost on the El Altar volcano were rescued alive. All are stable, authorities indicated. (I)
