Associate Professor of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (PFUR) Sergey Voznesensky assessed the epidemiological consequences of the arrival of refugees from the self-proclaimed LPR and DPR in Russia. In his opinion, this will not fundamentally change the situation with coronavirus in Russia.
The expert noted that the same strain dominates in these territories as in Russia – “omicron”. “If some cases of disease with another strain were registered on the territory of the LPR and DPR, which would be more contagious than the Omicron strain, then in this case there would be a certain risk of worsening the epidemiological situation,” Voznesensky explained to RIA Novosti.
The infectious disease specialist recalled that in the Rostov and Voronezh regions, the level of collective immunity increased in February due to the fact that the incidence of coronavirus in recent months was quite high.
Recall that the LPR and DPR announced a general mobilization, the population was evacuated to the Rostov region due to the threat of Ukraine’s invasion.
