Italy has asked the EU to exclude the energy sector from the sanctions package against the Russian Federation, and several other European countries have expressed concern that the consequences of sanctions could affect their economies, writes Bloomberg.

According to agency sources, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi held talks with partners in the European Union on how to reduce the impact of sanctions on key sectors of the Italian economy. In particular, the issue of withdrawing from the restrictions of the energy sector was considered. It is also reported that in January, Rome sent an informal message to the European Commission, in which he outlined his concerns about the possible reverse effect of sanctions.

Italy also fears for its luxury goods market and has asked the EU to develop a compensation mechanism to help soften the blow.

In addition, Italy and Germany are trying to protect their banking sector, while France, the Netherlands and Poland fear the consequences due to sanctions against sectors such as energy, raw materials and financial institutions, adds Bloomberg.

Recall, the day before, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen announced the “inevitable global consequences” of Western sanctions against Russia in the event of an escalation in Ukraine.
