On the night of this Saturday the 12th, a new flood occurred in the El Descanso sector, in the north of the city.

A large amount of water was dammed causing a natural dam in the area. Four drivers were trapped, but there were no injuries.

A similar situation occurred in May last year. According to the preliminary report of the Cuenca Fire Department, a 49-year-old woman was successfully evacuated, as well as three men aged 49, 52 and 54 who were in vehicles flooded by the formation of this lagoon.

Vehicles trapped, houses and power plant flooded and pedestrian bridges collapsed, among damages due to rains in Cuenca

To rescue the frightened victims, the Firefighters came with amphibious vehicles that allowed them to take them to a safe place, thus guaranteeing their health.

Although the causes of this new flood in El Descanso are still under analysis, Édison Moscoso, traffic expert and former zonal director of the Ecuadorian Traffic Commission (CTE), expressed his opinion on his Twitter account that this “again activates a risk of long data, extractive activities in this area continue to be a constant danger, it is important to review and investigate the reasons for this event”.

Technicians explain that the flood that El Descanso suffered this Tuesday, in Azuay, is related to the La Josefina disaster in 1993

To this the doctor and firefighter in passive service said that it is necessary to be forewarned because of the three drainage arches only one works, because two are covered with stone material. Very close to the place of the flood works a power plant.

A similar event occurred last May, but it was of greater magnitude, because that day a bus with 20 passengers inside was blocked. After that day that scared more than one, Felipe Cisneros, director of the Program for Water and Soil Management (Promas) of the University of Cuenca, told EL UNIVERSO that what happened there was a consequence of what was left in La Josefina, 28 years ago, when a large-scale landslide and stone material created a dam that blocked several rivers.
