British Foreign Secretary Elizabeth Truss said that her country does not want to impose sanctions against Russia and will do so only in the event of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. It is reported by RBC.

Truss has previously said that the UK draft on sanctions against Russia would affect companies “significant to the Kremlin” as well as some individuals. She stressed that she has no disagreements with the Russian people and that the UK prefers to maintain good relations with the Kremlin.

However, London remains concerned about the situation around Ukraine, according to the minister. Truss did not disclose the details of the project on sanctions.

Earlier, on her Twitter, the head of the Foreign Ministry wrote that the war in Ukraine would have disastrous consequences for Russia, Ukraine and the security of Europe. According to her, this is “the toughest sanctions regime against Russia that we have ever had.” It will mark “the biggest change in our approach since leaving the European Union,” Truss said.

The day before, Liz Truss arrived in Moscow on a two-day working visit. As expected, the central topics of Truss’s talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov will be Russian proposals on security guarantees and the situation around Ukraine. Truss’s visit is the first since December 2017, when current British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has held the position.

Since 2021, statements have been made in Western countries, as well as in Ukraine, about a possible “invasion” of Russia into Ukrainian territory. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is moving troops within its territory and at its own discretion. According to him, it does not threaten anyone. Nevertheless, Russia is threatened with sanctions. White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the US government has prepared sanctions lists of representatives of the Russian elites and their families in case of Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Meanwhile, an employee of the National Security Council (NSC) of the White House, Peter Harrell, announced that new anti-Russian sanctions that could be imposed by the United States in the event of an aggravation of the situation around Ukraine are aimed at reducing the industrial potential of the Russian Federation and damaging the economy.
