At a regular court session in Tbilisi, former President Mikheil Saakashvili said that he secretly met in London with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko. This is reported by Vzglyad with reference to information from its own correspondent.
According to the publication, during his tenure as president of Georgia, the politician held four secret meetings with Lukashenka in London, and it is thanks to these trips, in his opinion, that South Ossetia and Abkhazia have not yet been recognized as the leader of Belarus. Saakashvili called these meetings “secret diplomacy” and admitted that this is the first time he talks about them in a public field. He did not name the dates of the visits. At the end of his speech Mikhail Saakashvili performed the anthem of Ukraine.
Recall that earlier the President of Belarus said that the republic could recognize South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states, and Crimea as part of Russia, “if he understands” and if Russian leader Vladimir Putin “says that there is a need for this.”
In turn, Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov said that Moscow does not see the need to send signals to Minsk about the need to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia, as well as Crimea as a region of Russia.
The trial of Saakashvili is ongoing in the case of embezzlement of about $ 3 million of state funds for personal needs. In Georgia, it is also known as the “jacket business”. According to the prosecution, during his presidency Saakashvili spent state money on jackets, coats and watches, paid for his son’s education, visited a beautician, rented expensive cars and a plane. He faces 7 to 11 years in prison.
Recall that Saakashvili was detained on October 1 in Georgia, where he was convicted in absentia on the murder of banker Sandro Girgvliani and the beating of deputy Valery Gelashvili. The former head of state began a hunger strike after his arrest, which lasted 50 days.
