Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg said that in the event of Russian aggression against Ukraine, they will support the sanctions package, even if “it will be painful for everyone.” This was reported by UNIAN with reference to a press conference held in Kiev with the foreign ministers of Ukraine, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
According to Shallenberg, this decision was made after he and colleagues from the Czech Republic and Slovakia visited the Donbass and assessed the severity of the situation on the demarcation line. The head of the department believes that there is a “real risk of military confrontation” on the European continent and that the security of Europe, as well, depends on the situation in Ukraine.
Schallenberg reminded those present that in the 21st century, “we don’t set boundaries with tanks and missiles,” so sanctions should be used as a deterrent. In addition, the Austrian authorities will soon decide on a new package of humanitarian aid to Ukraine – it is estimated at 2.5 million euros.
Earlier, Austria called for the inclusion of Nord Stream 2 in EU sanctions against Russia. This statement was made by Austrian Vice-Chancellor Werner Kogler. According to him, Nord Stream 2 affects European foreign policy, and Austria’s partners “have different opinions about the gas pipeline.”
