The Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline will not work if Russia invades Ukraine, US President Joe Biden said after talks with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

Speaking at a press conference following the talks, Biden stressed: “If Russia invades, if tanks, troops cross the border of Ukraine again, then there will be no more Nord Stream 2. We will do it. I promise we can do it.”

In addition, Biden said that the main topic of the negotiations, which took the most time, was the situation around Ukraine. According to him, the United States, along with Germany and other allies, “are working together to achieve a diplomatic settlement of the situation.”

Biden also recalled that Germany is the closest ally of the United States. “We are working closely on the issue of deterring Russian aggressive actions in Europe, responding to challenges from China and promoting stability in the Western Balkans,” the American leader emphasized, adding that he discussed with Scholz the package of sanctions against Russia being worked out by the parties, prepared in case of its invasion of Ukraine.
